We are expanding our digital presence! To reduce our reliance on Facebook and offer you more privacy-focused alternatives, we are now testing information feeds on Signal, Telegram, and Mastodon.

We want to let you choose the platform that suits you best. Here is how they work and where to find us.

📢 TELEGRAM (Recommended for News)

Our Telegram channel is the closest alternative to our Facebook page. It acts as a public broadcast where you can easily scroll back and see old posts, videos, and history.

🔒 SIGNAL (Privacy Focused)

For those who prefer Signal, we have created an announcement group. Note: Unlike Telegram, you will not see any posts made before you joined. You will only receive updates moving forward.

⚠️ Important Privacy Setting: In a Signal group, other members can technically see the member list. If you want to keep your phone number private, you must change your settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy > Phone Number.
  2. Set “Who can see my number” to Nobody.

🐘 MASTODON (The Social Network)

Mastodon is a decentralized, ad-free social network similar to X (Twitter) but without a central owner, prioritizing user privacy. We have chosen to host our account on mastodon.nu, a reliable, Nordic-focused server hosted within the EU to ensure strict data protection.

What about Course Groups?

For now, our course discussions remain where they are. However, both Signal and Telegram offer excellent features for discussion groups. We are looking into moving specific course chats and community discussions to these platforms in the future if/when we decide to move away from Facebook Groups entirely.

We are also keeping an eye on other community-based alternatives, though we are mindful of not introducing too many new apps with unfamiliar interfaces at once.

See you on the other side!

Musical instruments for Ukraine

Do you have any musical instruments laying around that you want to donate?

You might have seen him on the local swing dance floors in Lund and Malmö or behind the bar at Ukrainian Beer Bar. Anders Banke has been on many trips with medical supplies to Ukraine. Next trip he’s also planning to bring lots of musical instruments.

At the end of September, we’re driving three ambulances to Eastern Ukraine, carrying not only medical supplies but also musical instruments for the Children’s Music School in the town of Chernivtsy in western Ukraine.

If you have an instrument or two lying around that you never use, please consider donating them by bringing it to the social dance on Wednesdays in Malmö (I will be there), or better still hand them in at the Ukrainian Beer Bar on Amiralsgatan 6 in Malmö (during bar opening hours) and we’ll make sure they get to someone who really needs it. – Anders Banke

Dance Shoes

(Almost) any pair of shoes can be swing dance shoes, though you most often see people wearing a mixture of tennis shoes/sneakers/gym shoes, leather soled shoes, and suede soled shoes. Heels are less common, although some people dance in heels (particularly Balboa dancers). Avoid spiky and high heels. Cheap hard plastic shoes often slide better than expensive rubber soles, so if you’re just getting started or are on a budget these kinds of cheap shoes are recommended.

Avoid outdoor running shoes. Especially those with black soles that leave marks on the floor

The most important part is the soles of the shoes.

Why?

Slide versus traction. Dancers are looking for shoes that allow them to move on the floor. Some floors are more slippery, and some less, and therefore many dancers have a mix of shoes on the rubber to leather spectrum (sticky/lots of traction to super slippery spectrum).

As a general rule, leather and suede soles will provide more slipperiness, and rubber soled shoes will provide more traction. Cheap plastic shoes often slide better than expensive rubber soles, so sometimes cheapest is best!

Make your regular shoes dance shoes

You can turn any pair of flat soled shoes into dance shoes by gluing leather or suede onto the bottoms. Local cobblers can do this for you, or you can do it yourself. The strongest cement glue is recommended.

How to suede your shoes.

In a pinch, you can even put nylons or socks over the front part of your shoe to slide better.

Where to buy

Sustainable and budget options

Use the shoes you already have, shop second hand stores, marketplace etc. Look for hard plastic soles or add suede/leather to the bottoms: How to suede your shoes.

Can I join the course without a partner?

The short answer is YES, but since there are often more followers than leaders who register, and many leaders are late to register, there is a high risk that you will first end up in a queue.

Please cancel your registration immediately if you cannot make it, even if you are still in queue. This will ensure that any last-minute spots are offered to the next person in line.

Can I switch lead/follow roles to get a spot?

Yes! most experienced dancers know a bit of both and you are very welcome to choose which one you want when you register. If you just want to dance and don’t care if you do that in the lead or follow role just put SWITCH in the comments.

If you already registered, just send us an e-mail

As a beginner SWITCH indicates that you are ready ad willing to learn any of the roles and as a more experienced danser SWITCH indicates that you already know a bit of both.

What if I find a partner after I register?

If you find a partner who is not already registered, have them register and include your name in the comment section. We will then pair your applications together.

We will pair together and count as a paired registration any unintentional separate registrations made by beginners who contact us immediately. However, we will not accept intentional attempts by experienced dancers to register as a couple with another dancer who has already been accepted. This is because it creates an imbalance in the courses.

Can I attend a course without a partner?

Yes, we take in more followers at the same rate as more leaders register. The chances of attending depend on how many are ahead in the queue and how long it is until the course starts.

When will I get a response?

Since we take in more followers at the same rate as more leaders register, it depends entirely on when they register, which they can do up until the course starts. If you have other plans and no longer wish to remain in the queue, it is important to cancel immediately so that the spot can go directly to the next in the queue. You can cancel most easily by clicking the cancellation button in your course email.

When should I pay?

You only pay when you have received a spot. You will still receive any discount even if you cannot pay early.

While waiting for a course spot…

…you are always welcome at our social dances, some of which also have Lindy Hop taster class for beginners.

Give a Lindy Hop workshop as a Christmas present!

Do you want to give a beginner’s Lindy Hop or other weekend/course as a Christmas present?

  1. Book the course in the recipient’s name, but use your phone and e-mail and write a gift in the comment field.
  2. After Christmas, you email us the recipient’s name, phone and e-maill by replying to the admission email.
  3. If the recipient cant make it the date you booked, just click cancel in the email and book a better date.

More classes and courses

Spring 2024 course registration is open!

BIG thank to teachers, volunteers and participants who participated in the autumn semester!

We only got an advanced Lindy Hop class and the last social dance at Cats’ Corner left before we take a winter break. More in the calendar and the printable overview.

Registration for the spring 2024 courses just opened, but no stress as everyone who registers until noon December 21st has the same chance of getting a spot as we will raffle the queue order. Read updated info about raffle and queue.

BalboaSolo Jazz and Blues dancing now have their own pages.

Lindy Hop 2024 schedule , Lindy Hop levels and essential building blocks

Social dances and events

We start the year with an unofficial Blues dance party January 6th. Monday Night Swing kicks off January 15th and Cats’ Corners start their Wednesday Night Hop January 10th. All three include a beginners drop-in class to send your friends to.

Wednesday Night Hop at Moriskan ris run by Cats Corner, a separate society with a separate membership, but we highly recommend it anyway.

We both need volunteers to make it happen.

More about volunteering for HepTown here and Cats’ Corner here.

Not yet mentioned on their page Cats’ Corner also needs a new door crew manager that actually gets a free semester of classes from HepTown…

All the best,
Your swing manager

Lindy Hop level placement for advanced levels

We will be conducting a new level placement for our highest levels in Lindy Hop, E and F.

Typically, those who have already completed these levels have been exempt from undergoing another audition. However, we have now made the decision to move away from auditions and instead use level placements to improve the level distribution of our courses and enhance the quality for participants. With this new system we want to include everyone in this level placement, ensuring that each individual is placed at the appropriate level.

The level placement will take place on August 30th at 6:30 PM at Ungdomens Hus in Malmö. There, you will have the opportunity to dance with both our instructors and your fellow course participants. Our instructors on these levels will assess and assign you to the level that best suits your skills and knowledge.

If you are registered for, but are not placed in  the E-level course this fall, you will be offered a place in an equivalent number of D-level courses instead. Full payment for F-level courses will only be required after the level placement, as there are no concurrent courses at the same day and time to transfer your registration to. However, in this case you still have the right to have your registration moved to any lower-level course.

Dancing regards,

The Teacher Team

Summer swing and big dance party in Lund

Spring dance courses and social dances are coming to an end soon, but there are still some exciting activities left. We have just started an advanced Lindy Hop course and will be starting a Balboa course next week. Mark your calendars and big swing dance party in Lund on June 3rd.

If you have friends who are interested in trying swing dancing, be sure to send them to our beginner weekends and social dances with beginner classes.

As summer approaches, we will have Swing In the Park starting on June 21st and Swing on the Beach starting on July 2nd. Both events will have drop-in classes in Lindy Hop, and we will also be opening up for other swing dances an hour before the regular time. If you are interested in teaching these, please register here.

Have a look at our plan for the fall season.

Monday Night Swing on April 24th will be moved to Stadshallen, and on May 29th to Smålands Nation, which will also be the last occasion this spring.

You can get all important dates in a printable format here, and the online calendar can be accessed here.

Dansen som föregick orden. Dansen som ersatte orden.

Nils-Erik Norrby

Communitysajter, chattforum, e-post, Ansiktsboken, bloggar, ”tweets”, ”insta”, ”snapp”.

Getting ready for your Lindy Hop weekend

A page with practical information for those that have just signed up for a beginners Lindy Hop weekend

Practical information for those who have just signed up for a beginner’s Lindy Hop weekend course. Most of the information is also applicable to those who take a course spread over several evenings and workshops on higher levels.

This is general information that applies to all weekends and all venues. More specific information will be sent out a few days before your specific workshop.

Good to know

  • CLOTHES. Attire is usually a mixture of training and everyday clothes. At social dances, people sometimes wear retro or vintage styles. Comfortable and loose-fitting or stretchy is good, and most people avoid tight jeans for example. an extra shirt/clothes can also help you stay fresh throughout the day.
  • SHOES. Bring your most comfortable indoor shoes. There are no requirements, but most people bring some version of sneakers/trainers/tennis shoes to classes. A slightly (or much) smoother sole can help you slide more while dancing. NO black-soled outdoor sneakers that leave black marks on the floor. Those who dance often will usually dance in a mix of sneakers, leather soled shoes, or suede soled shoes at social dances.
  • WATER. A water bottle and an extra T-shirt or clothes are also good to have to keep you hydrated and fresh throughout class.
  • LUNCH. Feel free to bring a lunch box and eat together. However, we usually do not have access to a kitchen, cutlery, etc. Lunch breaks are one (1) hour.
  • VALUABLES. Always bring all valuables into the course room.

After the Beginners course, the next course is called “B. Beginners-continued” and is offered as a semester course on several different days in Lund and Malmö. Don’t wait too long to register…

Lindy Hop Fall semester

New course layout!
What would you like to improve in your Lindy Hop?

Experienced extra leads are offered to participate for free on the beginner weekend 14-15 / 5

The corona restrictions in Sweden will be lifted from February 9th

The pandemic is not over but it is now entering a new phase where restrictions are no longer needed.

We’ll keep most of our precautionary measures for a while longer but can now soon start social dances and increase the number of course participants who in several venues have now been limited to 14 people.

Most courses have already been postponed to the middle/end of February, thus it is not too late to sign-up.

Singn-up here

Vaccination remains important to reduce the risk of infection and greatly reduce the risk of serious illness. The interval for the 3rd dose has now been reduced to 3 months.

You do not to be a Swedish citizen to get vaccinated in Sweden!

Book vaccination here and get more information in english here

We are also pleased to announce that our friends from Cats’ Corner will be arranging their fantastic Lindy Hop dance camp Malmö Spring Jump the 13-15th May 2022. During the weekend, a beginners’ weekend will also be offered in collaboration with HepTown

Decisive factors for the removal of the restrictions in Sweden

  • Knowledge of omicron with several international studies showing milder disease
  • The number of covid patients at intensive care is stably low despite massive spread of infection
  • High vaccination coverage with a high vaccination rate in recent weeks

(Se hela presskonferensen och läs vad FHM skriver.)

What about Lindy Hop courses and social dances?

  • The social dances will return in mid-February. Preliminary start the 14th February
  • We can now accept more than 14 participants for a course in a large 170m2 room but will continue to avoid unnecessarily large course groups.
  • We keep most of our previous measures such as keeping the partner rotation on the courses down for a while longer
  • Staying home when you are ill has always been a good idea. Let’s make it a permanent rule!
  • We still like to see that participants are vaccinated, but from 9 February it is no longer a requirement we can make.
