Have you been to our recent Beginner Aerial Workshop, and you feel like you need more practice? Or have you tried one of our previous aerial workshops, but you never got around to practicing the material more? Join this workshop in June, to wrap up / recap / clarify the technique of different aerials and focus on spotting while practicing them.

The workshop will be taught by Jonathan and Diane:
Jonathan, started aerials about 3.5 years with acrobatic R’n’R.
Since then he has been practicing and sharing knowledge about 2 times a week. Let’s say he knows the fundamentals.
‘Fear-less’ Diane, as a former rugby player, took off with Jonathan.
Together then can now do a decent amount of relatively complex moves and explain them.

We will give a strong enough background to understand and figure out how to practice aerials safely. We will introduce material that can be used in many aerials (we will not teach all the options but will explain how the building blocks can come together).
We will probably not ‘dance’ all the aerials but cover some way to lead them, initiate or abort them (all safely).
We will probably cover a ‘lot’ of material for 2 reasons:
(1) to see how you can use what you know (or learn on the day) a bit further.
(2) because it is less painful for your body than doing the same for hours.

PRICE: 200kr/person

TIME: 10am – 1pm
There will be no formal ‘break’ but because everyone will be spotting and there will be little dancing it will be easy to grab a snack or two.

LEVEL:
Open to all levels, any kind of dancer / acro-fan (really).
Just need to be able to jump, count ‘1-2- down-up’, and carry your own weight.

PARTNER CHANGE
There will be partner change during the workshop. You will be able to match with people you feel confident to try things. And also try with people you may not be confident with at the beginning.
Learn how to build the trust and safety. Other experienced aerials dancers from CPH will be attending and will help in addition to Diane and Jonathan.

– Intro + warm up + start exercises (balance, trust, etc.)
10.30-11.00
– Building trust and sense of timing/momentum with: Dips, slides, tricks, small jumps
11.00-11.45
– Slingshot(s) – Version of knickerbocker/backflip but safer we believe and very safe to spot, and easy to dance.
11.45-12.15
– Straddle and variations, depending on progress
(Straddle is a base for flick-straddle, candle, over the back,
swans, swing set, etc.)
12.15-12.45
– Shalom
(Ideally you know the tandem Charleston but not necessarily
This is an easy move, easy to spot that can lead to many
funny variations.)
12.45-13.00
– Wrapping up, question, recap, stretching.

Have you heard about the lindy hop? It’s the happiest form of swing dance there is. Lindy hop is a partner dance that originates from Harlem, New York, in the 1930’s. It’s danced to the tunes of big bands, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Today, lindy hop is an international phenomenon, danced worldwide.

In May, you have a chance to try the lindy hop. The Copenhagen Lindy Exchange is the biggest swing dance event of Denmark, with five days of live music and dancers from more than 30 countries. Still interested? Awesome!

At the beginners workshop, you’ll learn some basic moves, that can get you through the night. Together with experienced teachers and other enthusiastic beginners, you’ll get to practice, try, and succeed!
After the beginners workshop, you’re invited to the Thursday party at Docken. Here, you’ll see for yourself what it’s really all about: Dancing, laughing, meeting people, and having an overall good time.

Frequently Asked Questions

“When registering, I’m asked to choose a role: Follower or leader. What is that?”
Lindy hop is a partner dance, meaning you’re dancing with someone. When dancing, there’s two roles: A leader and a follower. The leader initiates the movement, suggesting directions. The follower responds to these suggestions, and has the option of adding spice to the movement. The two roles have the same basic footwork, but different characteristics.

“Do I have to register with someone?”
No, not at all. At the workshop, we will rotate partners, so that everybody get to dance with everybody. However, we will balance the workshop, so we have an even number of people leading and people following. This also means, that if you do register with someone, and you choose opposite roles, then we’ll be able to offer you a spot immediately.

“Why do we have to change partners during the workshop?”
Lindy hop is a danced based on leading and following, and different people lead and follow differently. We believe that you’ll learn these skills better, if you change partner, instead of dancing with the same person all the time.

“I registered, but I am on a waiting list”
First of all: Yay, you registered! Your place on the waiting list means, that the registration is unbalanced, and that we’re waiting for people to register with the opposite role of yours to sign up. So if you’re registering as a lead, and you’re on the waiting list, that means that we have too many registered leads, and we’re waiting for people to register as follows in order to balance it out.

“This all sounds amazing, but one day is not enough for me”
